About MAP Costa Rica
My name is Marlon Obando. I was born in Turrialba, Costa Rica and served in an Evangelical church since I was 11 years old. I lived on a farm and worked hard with my father. I met my wife, Jessica when she came to my town on a mission trip. We were married ten months later. I later moved to Texas where I lived ten and a half years. I worked in many different places and learned many different skills as well as meeting and growing with several wonderful pastors. I have always loved to serve others.
MY CALLING AND MINISTRY
In 2008 my wife and I were sent to Costa Rica by the Holy Spirit to bring something different to the region. We began leading worship in the port city of Limon, but very quickly the Lord led us back to my hometown of La Suiza. We immediately started sharing our testimony with all of my relatives and friends. We looked for a local church to become a part of but every church we went to was doing at least several of the things that God had told us he didn’t want us to be a part of. Through these experiences God helped us to realize that we were being called to start planting churches without the help of a local congregation. Our model for the churches is the church in Acts 2:42 "They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." NIV From this verse all the way to Acts 2:47, we see that the church is supposed to be a family that cares about each other and honors God.
One of our primary guiding scriptures are the words found in Isaiah 61. “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities.”NIV
This passage is so important to us. The Holy Spirit wants us to go out and proclaim the Good News, set people free from depression and addictions, see them transformed and the end result will be that families and whole towns that were in ruins will be rebuilt. Praise Jesus we are seeing this happen!!
I love what I do as a pastor and missionary alongside my family. I have two young daughters with my wife. What I love the most is seeing families turn to God and watch the amazing transformations He does.
I believe that salvation is obtained through Jesus sacrifice and grace alone, not by works. Jesus Christ is the son of God and resurrected on the third day and will someday return for His church, the Rapture. I believe in the resurrection of the dead. Those whose name are found in the Book of Life will go to heaven. Hell is a place of torment reserved for the devil and his angels and all those who do not repent and call on the name of Jesus. I want to get as many people to heaven by preaching the gospel.
As a pastor I want them to get to heaven in as Christ-like a condition as possible. We are not just called to be saved but to produce fruit and be conformed to the image of Jesus. I believe in the indwelling Holy Spirit that helps us unto every good work and reveals to us the Father’s will. I also believe in all the gifts of the Holy Spirit for the edification of the body and not to create chaos. Christianity is not a religion it is a love relationship with the living Everlasting Eternal Immortal God that produces change in an individual and those around him.
Our Legal Covering
We work under the 501C3 of Healing Every Nation Inc. They are a non-profit organization that came out of Vinelife Christian Fellowship. Vinelife was the church that mentored and ordained Marlon. The president is Eddie Brito, a seasoned missionary working in Africa and Brasil. Healing Every Nation has an accountant and a board of directors that help us with the legal end. We also have a group of individuals that are committed to praying for us, providing spiritual accountability, encouragement, advice, and fundraising, to help MAP Costa Rica thrive.
